… and anything inspired by them

(Irene Irene) Cara Cara Granita

It’s Oscar time again, in case you hadn’t noticed. Which is pretty much what I wound up doing this year. Not noticing, I mean. I somehow managed to see only one Oscar-nominated movie over the past twelve months and I … Continue reading

Two For You…

I was thirteen years old when Anthony Blanche introduced me to a most sinister drink– the Brandy Alexander. Mr. Blanche– or Antoine, as he sometimes styled himself–rolled his “r”‘s and wore varnish on his toenails. He  drank champagne in the … Continue reading

Croaked Madame

When my brother went off to the south of France for his year abroad, one of the first things he planned to do was take a little side trip to Monaco to visit Princess Grace.

He had no prior introduction to either Her Serene Highness nor her family, but I am almost certain he considered that, since he and she were half Irish and both of their fathers were from Philadelphia, he was a shoe-in for a dinner invite. Continue reading

Apple Brown Betty White

I have this “thing” for Betty White. I always have. I  love this woman so much that I could just eat her with a spoon. So that is precisely what I set out to do. Figuratively, of course. She’s a … Continue reading

Southern Accent: Collard Greens

I’m no Southerner. No one in my family has claimed residency south of the Mason-Dixon line for at least 150 years. I do, however, like to pretend I’m from the Land of Cotton-and-Coca-Cola from time to time, just to entertain myself. … Continue reading

Mmm… Popovers…

So there I was in Neiman Marcus on a Saturday afternoon looking for a bridesmaid’s dress. My friend Shannon, who hates shopping, thought it would be a grand idea to ask along the one gay man in her universe that … Continue reading

My Life According To Oscar or, How To Make A Donald Crisp

I considered other Oscar winners for the year, but they just didn’t inspire cooking. Yes, I could have made a Sergeant Yorkshire pudding, but that seemed ridiculous. And under no circumstances was I about to make anything with the name Suspicion in it. In terms of baking, I firmly believe that anything Joan Fontaine-inspired is to be avoided, since the result will either be weepy or worse, too bitter to eat. Continue reading

Manhattan (Sundae) Melodrama

I know this is going to sound crazy, but I love ice cream. I also happen to have an deep affection for Manhattan cocktails. So it was only natural that, after an unpleasant night at work, I should come home, … Continue reading

The Special Sauce of the Thousand Islands

“Would you like Bleu cheese, French, Russian, Ranch, oil and vinegar, or Thousand Island dressing?” It was a familiar chant I’d hear from waiters and waitresses in restaurants high and low-end– wherever I’d go in the 1970’s. Some might lament … Continue reading

Beautiful Food

It’s dreary outside today. I thought I’d spend the afternoon getting things done about the apartment, but that just isn’t working out so well. So instead, I thought I’d share another episode of my favorite cooking programme (it’s from the … Continue reading
